Survey method and timings
There are a number survey methods that can be used to survey birds. The survey method depends on what information is required. For large areas, predetermined routes or transects are walked and all birds seen or heard are recorded. For buildings or vegetation, a visual inspection is made to establish current or previous nesting.
Legislation
The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (and amendments) makes it illegal to intentionally kill, injure, or take any wild bird or their eggs or nests. Further penalties can occur for offences related to birds listed on Schedule 1 such as barn owl, kingfisher and red kite. These offences include intentional or reckless disturbance to these birds at their nests, or their dependent young.
